Furniture maker and musician, Anneka is one talented lady Aged 33, Anneka works alongside her father Peter Thwaites in their workshop on Murphys Road, where they can be found doing everything from milling trees through to blacksmithing. There they have a showroom with a collection of Anneka’s work, as well as some promotional material for her latest album ‘Pure and Simple’. While working, Anneka can be found covered in wood filings, creating rustic wooden platters with wrought iron handles through to furniture pieces and clocks. Once finished she picks up her guitar and starts working on her next song, or heads out fishing, hunting and tramping - a unique blend of qualities she is proud of. “A lot of people are shocked when they find out everything I do. I guess getting messy in the workshop is different to the image of a songwriter,” she laughs. Anneka’s first album titled ‘In the Pink’ was released in 2008. It featured Cairo Knife Fight’s Nick Gaffaney on drums, Break’s Co-op’s Richie Pickard on bass, and Harry Harrison, the session musician to Bic Runga and Dave Dobbyn.

Her second album ‘Pure and Simple’, was released in May of this year after being recorded in an old wooden chapel at Old St Mary’s Convent on Rapaura Road. It gained a lot of attention and support from the community which resulted in a sell-out crowd for the album’s release at the Boathouse Theatre. “The support I had for my second album was incredible. On the night of the release we sold all of the 118 tickets and had to turn people away at the door,” she said. Anneka’s style of music is described as a mix of folk, country and finger-style guitar and her career officially began in 2003 when performing with Steve Leslie. Together with Pete Costello they formed Fresh Frequencies, a Marlborough songwriter showcase album and concert, before Anneka took a new direction and embarked on a solo career in 2006, when she studied Contemporary Music at Christchurch’s Jazz School. After a stint in Christchurch Anneka returned home to pursue her love for woodwork which, in-turn, gives her the flexibility to spend time on her music. With no current plans for her third album,

By Adam Poulopoulos A Redwood Lifestyle Care and Village resident celebrates a big milestone this weekend, surrounded by her family. Ngaire Badman (nee Conway,) a lifelong Marlburian, turns 100 tomorrow, and family from around the world will be joining her for afternoon tea. Relatives from England, Hong Kong, Western Australia and around New Zealand are jetting in for the event. Overall Ngaire has four children, 14 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren, with the majority making an appearance tomorrow. It is the first time Ngaire will get to meet her youngest relative, who is three months old. Born in Blenheim, Ngaire has

lived in Seddon, Grassmere or Ward throughout her life, and is the last remaining direct ancestor of the Conway family, who originally settled in Westport in the 1850s after moving from England. She attended Marlborough College, catching the train to school every morning, and married Sandy Badman in 1936. She said having been through all of life’s ups-and-downs, working hard was the secret to living long and staying happy. It is not just her family who are recognising her birthday. Ngaire has received messages from the Queen, Governor-General Sir Jerry Mateparae, John Key, internal affairs minister Peter Dunne and local politician Colin King.

McCallum’s thankful for community rally

inbrief

By Adam Poulopoulos The wife of a Blenheim pilot hurt in last month’s helicopter crash is grateful after Marlborough’s business community offered their services free of charge in the aftermath. Sue McCallum said businesses K J Bennett and Sons, Morgan Plumbing and Wadsco Motor World have all pitched in as husband Grant continues his rehabilitation. Grant and passenger Sam Kersten were both seriously injured when the helicopter they were in crashed at Grassmere on July 6. Sue said Grant returned home from hospital on July 21, but not before K J Bennett and Morgan Plumbing made alterations to the house. “Greg Bennett installed a

wheelchair ramp, and Morgan Plumbing put in a snake shower head to make it easier for Grant to shower.” Soon after, Wadsco allowed the McCallum’s to trade in their manual car for an automatic, so Grant could drive. Payment has been deferred to April next year. “These three companies all came in and helped us try to move on,” Sue said. “I just want to thank them. I thought it was very good of them all.” Sue also thanked Blenheim woman Di Morrissey, who set up Grant’s Givealittle fundraising webpage. With Grant not working and with no income protection insurance, Sue said they had lessened the financial

pressure. Even with the help, she said she had sold some assets, including a horse float bought for $30,000 three years ago. Now, Grant is walking, assisted by a frame, but does not expect to be walking unaided until late this year. He said the family were trying to source the money for a replacement helicopter six weeks out from grape frost protection season, but it was difficult. “We’re trying to replace the machine, but I’m not working, and trying to make up the shortfall in the meantime.” Grant is hoping to be back flying before his licence is voided in March next year. Strong response to college consultation By Adam Poulopoulos T h e fa c i l it a t o r fo r t h e Marlborough colleges public consultation is surprised by both the quality and quantity of feedback she received. The public placed around 620 submissions to Janet Kelly (pictured) before the window closed at the end of July. The figure was up from around 350 during the first consultation round. Ms Kelly said she had been expecting about 400 submissions. “It is a fantastic response. The majority have put in some good comments about the option they favour, and other things they feel need consideration.”

Submitters included parents of students from preschool age through to current college pupils, while students past and present also had their say. “It was especially good to get

the feedback from parents of the younger kids, because their kids will be using the facilities in the future,” Ms Kelly said. The submitters’ overall preference was for two independentlyrun single-sex colleges on a new site, an option quoted at about $51.5 million. “The submitters felt it was important to retain single-sex education, but they’d be close enough to share facilities, or have both types of classes,” Ms Kelly said. “They felt the schools would have a greater chance of retaining their identity, and it would allow for socialising with the opposite sex.”

The slightly more expensive option to have one purpose-built co-educational college was second, with the status quo, which requires $11 mil for maintenance to existing buildings, third. Ms Kelly also said most submitters felt the quality of teaching was more important than the buildings it was given in. Ms Kelly is now writing her draft report, for both boards of trustees to consider. Wednesday, August 20 is the latest the Ministry of Education will receive the final report. No date has been set for education minister Hekia Parata’s final decision.

David Haase has joined Heritage Boutique Marlborough Vintners Hotel as the new executive chef. David trained in fine dining in his home country of Germany and has worked in two one star Michelin restaurants in his career to date. One being the Hotel am Schlossgarten and the other hotel restaurant HirShen Stuttgart. He came to New Zealand in 2007 to take up the position of sous chef at Herzog Estate Winery on a one year contract, but fell in love with New Zealand and stayed. For the last three years he has been head chef at Wither Hills Winery and now takes up the

new role at Heritage Boutique Marlborough Vintners Hotel to run his own kitchen. David is excited about his new challenge and is inspired by the hotel’s own vegetable garden, orchard and olive grove. He is also passionate about

utilising local ingredients. “Marlborough has fantastic local produce and the menus I create will be heavily influenced by seasonal, fresh produce,” he said. “We are excited about this opportunity to have David join

our team to enhance our reputation as a truly gourmet boutique hotel,” says Tracy Purcell, general manager of Heritage Boutique Marlborough Vintners Hotel. Heritage Boutique Marlborough Vintners Hotel Blenheim is set on Rapaura Road, and is surrounded by Marlborough’s major internationally acclaimed vineyards. The hotel situated in the sauvignon blanc capital of New Zealand was designed by architect Anton Tritt who is well respected in the South Island. Anton Tritt designed the sixacre property for maximum aesthetics and to fully embrace the stunning vineyard setting.

Note-able moment for Westpac’s ATM By Adam Poulopoulos It is all change at Westpac’s Blenheim branch, as the bank prepares to welcome its newest staff member into the building. Renovations are under way as they look to move their smart ATM, affectionately called ‘Charlie,’ from outside into a new 24-hour lobby. Work began a week ago to install a new door, and

Charlie’s move-in date has been tentatively set for Monday, August 18. Blenheim branch manager Mel Austin said the new arrangement would provide customers with more security, and a more comfortable option than depositing money in the rain. “It’s not an ideal location currently, being on the corner next to an alleyway.

“If you want to deposit a bit of cash it’s quite nice to be able to do it inside.” She said the 24-hour setup would appeal to those with unusual working hours. Charlie will be joined by a change machine, which will deposit rolls of coins, at a later date. Right: Branch manager Mel Austin.

BP Computers to give away laptops Brendon Price Computers is hoping to bring local groups into the future with their donation bundles. The business will be giving away laptop packages to sports clubs or community groups in the region. The packages include a refurbished laptop, with a new battery and upgraded components including Windows 7 Pro, Antivirus, Microsoft Office and online backup.

If the group wishes to retire their old Windows XP computer the package also includes free data transfer. BP Computers manager Brad Clark said it was important clubs were up-todate. “Technology is becoming a bigger and bigger part of their activities. “A lot of these organisations have limited means so often their IT setup is under-funded, and often it requires group

members to use their own computers which can be a bit of a challenge.” He said the response so far had been positive. Submissions will be taken for the month of August, with the successful applicants to be chosen in the first week of September. For more information contact BP Computers.

How your rates are calculated responsibilities. General rates and charges apply to every property owner in Marlborough, irrespective of whether they use these services. Separate targeted rates and charges (to pay for specific services or projects) are levied where the targeted ratepayer is considered to directly benefit. For example, targeted rates for water, sewerage, and rubbish collection are charged only to

Marlborough is divided into six geographic areas for rating. General rates and charges are allocated so each geographic area meets its share of the net cost of Council’s operating expenses, capital expenditure and debt servicing costs. General rates and charges help pay for roads and drainage, libraries, parks and other community facilities, and council’s regulatory functions and environmental management

properties where those services are able to be provided. The rating effect is different on individual properties because • movements in general rates do not impact uniformly on each geographic rating area, and • movements in targeted rates affect only those properties able to receive these services.

Pollard Park a ‘hidden gem’ Everyone in Marlborough knows that Pollard Park is a lovely spot and now the word has spread even further afield with Blenheim’s premier park rated Number 13 in the top 25 parks in the South Pacific region. The rating is amongst the results for 2014 on Trip Advisor, a website where members of the public can log reviews and advice on destinations and holiday services. Pollard Park is in good company on a list headed by Perth’s Kings Park and Botanic Garden with Auckland’s Cornwall Park in fifth place. Pollard

Park, described as a hidden gem and a well-kept, peaceful spot with

something for everyone, is ranked immediately after Hagley Park in Christchurch. Pollard Park is an easy stroll from the centre of town – a good lunchtime walk. The spring bulbs are already shooting away and the annual beds are coming into flower now. Once part of the original Waterlea Farm and crossed by Fulton’s Creek, Pollard Park stretches over 24 hectares with a well-established camellia collection, rose beds and potager garden.

bmarlborough.co.nz In reply to dog owners in paper 1st Aug. RE WINSTANLEY’S DOG PACK

Maybe we would like to have 6 kids but unless we could afford to feed and cloth our kids form our income we wouldn’t have them. If you cannot afford to feed and vet your dog’s don’t have them. Take responsibility. I’m not gonna for your dogs. From 1 cat lover that does not complain. The springlands couple that has 16 pooches and pay only 400 rego which is 25 per pooch how come I pay 86 dollars. Brian Re Winstanley’s dog pack they do annoy people - the best part about leaving purkiss street was leaving behind that infernal racket made by too many handbag dogs in too small an area. And many people run their dogs well away from others - not relevant to dog rego costs. I object to a discount being given for having so many dogs when people like me who own 2 dogs that are desexed and microchipped should be entitled to a discount for being sensible!

SECOND HAND SUNDAY Great idea MDC. Curb side recycling is nothing new in Nz. Auckland District Council has been doing this for years. All residents are encouraged to recycle goods on their curb side for two weeks in October. At the end of two weeks, Council rubbish trucks dispose of the left over goods. Non-for profit groups shouldn’t worry, there will be plenty to go round. Everyone gains something here. Great idea MDC. Looking forward to the clean out.

Thank you to St Marks staff and clients for all the effort that was put into the catering Saturday 2/8 you all went the extra mile, bunch of special people who gave back.

PHILOSOPHY It was a great American Indian Chief who said something like ït would not be until the last fish had been caught and the last tree felled that man will realise that they could not eat or drink money”. Time now to heed words

GREAT COMPUTER SERVICE Ablaze computers, High Street, fantastic; found 52 viruses missed by others, with Nod anti virus. Thanks.

HAVE SOME SELF RESPECT

Ladies and gents you live in (or are visiting) blenheim in the South Island, not South Auckland your pajamas are proper attire to wear to the supermarket. This is not only trashy and disrespectful but the epitome of laziness! Sprout some self respect and dress yourself. Scotty.

RATES FOR GLASSES Marks comment. I know that lady this is about, the side walk was not up to standard I took photos of it, she had really bad facial damage, eye damage and glasses were smashed. Council has insurance for this purpose it would not come out of rates money. Its called public liability insurance. What she was trying to show was how the council would only pay half if she signed a secrecy clause.

MORTGAGE BROKER I recommend Paul Fuller at Prosper. Most honest mortgage broker.

OBESITY IS NOT A DISABILITY! It is a mental health issue.. no medical condition causes obese ness... to say it is, is a disgrace to those that are. Management of obese eating is available.... help to cope is available for TRUELY disabled people.

BUILD THE BYPASS What is it going to take for people to realise we need to do something about our infrastructure? Hopefully no more people getting hit by trains. The situation is mad – why is there still a railway track running through one of our busiest roundabouts? There’s a solution to all this. Build the bypass and move everything over!

CONGRATULATIONS CAROL

CLASSIC Blenheim is: Last tuesday morning, 11.30, young chap riding his bike, no hands or helmet chatting on a cell phone. Classic-perhaps; gutsy-for sure, as it was right past the doors of the main police station!

IGNORANT DOG OWNERS The amount of dog poo down the Taylor River is gross! I don’t like taking my children there to run around with our dog incase they stand in it. But I’ve been thinking that maybe the PD workers should be made to pick it up, because there are always going to be ignorant dog owners around who won’t, unfortunately. KC

NO FLOWERS PLEASE

Congratulations to Carol Taylor for her hard effort organising Bride of the Year. I entered it 12 years ago and remember how special it was to wear my dress again. Great effort.

MESSED UP WORLD

We really do live in a very messed up world, planes being shot down, schools being bombed, innocent people (which is murder) police planting evidence, corrupt government, who continuously lie to us. yet they are never held accountable for their actions. Because you people don’t stand up, more people will die, the poor will suffer. you will continue to be slaves of your government. imagine if the schools here stared being bombed, and your kids were killed, would you stand up then shame on governments, military etc, and the people who don’t seem to care!!!!!

Catch them Dear Ed, I think it would be interesting if a Sun reporter sat outside their office and took photos of all the drivers on their cellphones. I see at least two a day when walking through the CBD, perhaps being shamed in the local newspaper would make them stop? Or perhaps the Police could sit an unmarked patrol on High Street and catch them in the act. The worst offender I have seen was a mother smoking a cigarette with kids in the backseat and her cellphone in the other hand steering the car with her knees. Unbelievable! Mary

Mouldy supermarket food Dear Ed, I have visited three supermarkets in the past two weeks and from each one I purchased food that I didn’t realise was mouldy until I got home. One packet of meat was green and smelly, one pack of grapes had mould on the bottom half I couldn’t see and a spongecake had green mould spots on it. I am not the first person to find this. I hear from friends who have the same thing. For some of my friends, it’s a bother to have to return to the supermarket in question. I took it all back but at the same time I really wish that our supermarkets would take better care of their produce and not try and flog it off as ‘specials’. Shopper

Farmers – fence your properties! Dear Ed, Across the river, opposite the NMIT, a field of hungry sheep are jostling close to the riverbank, trying to get grass. This is seen clearly from the Opawa River Reserve, where I walk dogs daily. Last year, I saw two bloated ewes that drowned after falling into the river, while trying to feed. Their rotting bodies were in the river for many days. Last night, I heard the bleating of a distressed ewe and this morning I spotted her; standing knee deep in the river, with no chance of escaping up the steep bank. Thanks to the SPCA this unfortunate animal has been rescued. And SPCA had other sheep rescues today. I hope the irresponsible farmers are charged for the rescue efforts. Why are farmers not fencing their river boundaries? This paddock is a flood plane, and the amount of pollution a field of sheep produces is significant. Cleaner waterways, and animal safety require sturdy fencing. Perhaps the MDC will comment. Rose Francis

Call for artists to enter competition Artists from Marlborough and the Top of the South are invited to enter a unique competition that has been designed to celebrate the beauty of this wine region. Titled ‘World of Wine’, the competition calls for artists to create an artistic representation of the Marlborough wine region with the current 40 cellar doors painted or drawn. All entries must be submitted by September 14, 2014 via post or drop-off to Escape to Picton Boutique Hotel in Picton. The top 20 artworks will be selected and displayed at Escape to Picton prior to final judging, and the top three prize winners will be revealed at a special function.

The first place winner will receive $2000, the second place winner will receive an accommodation and dinner package to the value of $700 at Escape to Picton, and third place will receive a $250 day spa voucher and $100 dinner voucher. The winners’ art will also be replicated into limited edition pieces and small and large prints. This will allow anyone who has travelled to Marlborough and toured the region’s wine cellars to take home a souvenir and remember their wonderful trip. For more info phone 03 573 7187.

Robin Dunn at the foot of the hills.

Council open to Wither Hills discussion By Adam Poulopoulos The Marlborough District Council is open to suggestions regarding future potential use within the Wither Hills Farm Park. Council reserves and amenities officer Robin Dunn submitted a report on the matter at a recent assets and service committee meeting. The report was presented in response to an enquiry about gravity-based commercial opportunities within the park, like zorbing or luging. Mr Dunn said there were provisions within the management plan for appropriate development, but the ideas needed to be compatible with the objectives and current activities in the park. The key objectives of the park are soil conservation and recreation. Another factor that needs to be considered is the park status as a working farm. Council is open to considering commercial opportunities that come along, but it is a balance. “In the future, potential may exist for a mountain bike hire and café at or near the Rifle Range Car Park, for example,” Mr Dunn said. “Everything’s got to fit in with the current activities, the farming operations and the animals too.” About 120,000 users traverse the 65 kilometres of walking and biking trails each year.

Local resuscitation team win cup Four Wairau Hospital resuscitation team instructors have won the national Duncan Galletly Cup. Michelle Udy, Dr Andrew Morgan, Dr Stuart Watchman and Mike McNabb were part of the 10-strong Nelson Marlborough team who won the cup. This cup is awarded to the best Certificate of Resuscitation and Emergency Care team of New Zealand resuscitation council instructors, based on candidate results and course evaluation forms. The cup was presented at the NZ Resuscitation Council conference in Queenstown last week. Ms Udy said the group delivered four courses a year based on resuscitation and trauma skills. She said cardiac arrest was the most stressful situation in medicine, and simulation training certainly

helped to ease that stress. Nelson Marlborough District Health Board chief executive Chris Fleming said the trophy reflected the team’s dedication. “I would like to acknowledge the effort the team have put in and the dedication to this training that they have shown. The feedback from their peers reinforces the quality of the training which aligns to our focus on continuously wanting to improve patient care.” The training is carried out in hospitals where it is a requirement for doctors and nurses to refresh their advanced resuscitation qualifications. This is the second time the Nelson and Wairau Hospital team have won the cup. The first time was in 2004.

Bluegrass loses licence Blenheim-based pokie operators Bluegrass Holdings has been found guilty of obtaining their gambling licence deceptively. The Gambling Commission published their decision earlier this week, stating Bluegrass supplied misleading financial information. Bluegrass’s licence was cancelled in July 2012 amid concerns they had supplied false information about their startup funding to the Department of Internal Affairs. Bluegrass primarily provided grant money to the racing sector, with Blenheim man Mike O’Brien heavily involved. Mike is the son of Patrick O’Brien, the former Bluegrass and Harness Racing New Zealand chairman. The licence will be cancelled on August 18, when Bluegrass’s gaming machines will all be

switched off. Bluegrass owns 144 pokie machines in eight pubs around New Zealand. Pub owners will have the

chance to switch suppliers, but will have to submit new licence applications to the Department of Internal affairs.

Students have been involved in adding a splash of colour to Mayfield School's hall. A new mural, painted by Pictonbased artist Alysha Heyrick,

now covers the back wall of the stage. The mural has been painted to reflect the school's values. Ms Heyrick took ideas from

10 different senior students to design the mural, with the entire process taking about 100 hours to complete.

Dry, cold in July It was not just those abstaining from alcohol that stayed dry in July, in fact, the whole town was looking parched. Data collected at the Blenheim Meteorological Station showed 9.9 millimetres of rain fell in July, making it the driest July since records began in 1930. July’s rainfall figure was about one tenth of that in June, while the long-term average for July is 64mm. Despite the absence of rain and more sunshine hours than usual, temperatures were lower than expected.

It was the coolest July since 2009, with an average temperature of 7.5 degrees celsius. That figure is 0.4 degrees below the long-term average. The reduced temperatures led to more frosts, with 17 ground frosts and 10 air frosts recorded. The long-term average for July is 15.1 ground frosts, and 7.4 air frosts.

Lifesaving device donated to college By Celeste Lodewyk Members of the Rotary Club of Blenheim paid a visit to the Marlborough Girls’ College on Wednesday bearing a special gift. The club has provided the funds for an AED iPad defibrillator worth $2800, which members Alastair Hebberd, Andy Rowe and Steve Metzger presented to MGC principal Karen Stewart. The donation came after MGC teacher Robyn An-

derson, who herself is a member of the Rotary Club of Blenheim, put in an application for funds for the defibrillator. “As one of Blenheim’s largest worksites this is a vital piece of lifesaving equipment that could be needed at any time, so we are very grateful to the club for their kind donation,” Karen said. Right: Alastair Hebberd, Robyn Anderson, Karen Stewart, Andy Rowe and Steve Metzger.

Steering in the right direction The Blenheim Menz Shed is helping wheel lost and abandoned push bikes back into the community. Blenheim Police is giving the Menz Shed the bikes they find, hoping they can be fixed. After the Menz Shed finishes with them the bikes are given the once-over by Bikefit Marlborough, before being distributed to charities in the area. Most of the two-wheelers fixed so far have been mountain bikes. At the moment, the Menz Shed is working on 22 bikes, with each taking about four hours to restore on average. Sometimes, parts from two bikes are combined to make one working bike.

Just do it

inbrief Football

Marlborough schoolteachers came out this week saying students were getting enough exercise in their daily schedules, but are they just in denial? Our Commonwealth Games results tend to indicate there’s not a problem at the top end, but it’s at the levels below the elite where the problem lies. It is clear student participation in sport has fallen in recent years. There are a number of explanations for this. The era of technology has driven kids to distraction, and seen them take up a more sedentary lifestyle. The era of junk food has made kids lazy and led to higher levels of obesity.

Nelson and Marlborough’s bid for a full ASB Premiership football side has been turned down by New Zealand Football. NZF decided not to expand the league on this occasion. Top of the South Football had placed the bid, in the hope of adding to the NZ King Salmon Nelson Marlborough Falcons, who play in the national under-20 competition.

Winter explorers Entries are still open for Marlborough’s Winter Explorer competition. The competition challenges individuals or groups to visit sites around the region, answer questions about each site and take a photo to prove they were there. About 500 people have already competed. For more information visit the Sport Tasman website.

Both those factors affect sleeping patterns, and then there’s that old explanation they get from their parents. ‘It’s generation Y’s fault. This would have never happened in my day.” Maybe instead of playing the blame game, we need to do something about it. We need to get creative, and show we’re invested in fixing the situation. Maybe a short attention span should be seen as a willingness to embrace new things, rather than reluctance to stick to task. Hockey Marlborough recently launched a new initiative, Renegade Hockey, which aims to

entice new players. Played on a smaller field with a softer ball, it is hoped that will drum up some interest. Maybe other sports can take a similar approach. Having smaller teams, but more of them, makes training and organising matches easier. Then there’s the social aspect. Sports like Ultimate Frisbee have grown because the competitive element is removed. Not everyone wants to be the next Usain Bolt, but everyone needs to be healthy. Rather than tell students to go for a run, we need to do things to help make it more attractive for them. Family sports teams? Ironically I’m just saying, not doing, but you get my point.

The Tasman Makos squad named for the upcoming ITM Cup features five spare Marlborough-based players. Brothers Quentin and Jesse MacDonald will share the hooking jersey, while props Tim Perry and Ross Geldenhuys, and loose forward Vernon Fredericks, have also been selected. Tasman open their season at Lansdowne Park against Hawke’s Bay on August 17.

By Adam Poulopoulos A Blenheim-based rower has had a disrupted preparation as he gears up to represent New Zealand. Marlborough Boys’ College old boy Harry Somerville, 19, will compete at the Under-21 Trans-Tasman Rowing Challenge at Lake Karapiro from August 28 to 30. Somerville, who rows for the Central Region High Performance Centre, suffered whiplash after a recent car crash, but said he had recovered and was looking forward to competing. “It was mostly shock I think. It was my first accident of that sort

of capacity. “I only missed one practice because of it. I bounced back pretty well.” Somerville, a cellar hand at Giesen Estate Wines, will be competing in the lightweight double, heavyweight quad and heavyweight eight at the event. The event is the return leg of the series. Somerville and fellow Marlborough-based rowers Corey McCaffrey and James McAnallen competed in Sydney in July. He said after “less than satisfactory” results in that meet the focus had been on improving. “This time I want to win. The

last time it was a bit of a wakeup-call. “For a lot of us it was our first time racing internationally. “We took it to heart and everyone needed to do a bit more high-intensity preparation.” He said he was proud to be representing New Zealand. “You grow up around the All Blacks, and as you get older you see other athletes doing their stuff. “It all seems to revolve around that silver fern.” Harry leaves next Friday for 10 days of preparation with the team before the meet.

Tokomaru Netball Club scored big this week after receiving a $1000 ANZ netball grant. The grant, which includes uniforms, bibs, balls and a gear bag, will be the first set of gear for the club’s new junior team. Coach Bindy Taylor said the grant was a real boost to the club. “We’ve never had juniors before and now we have two, so we needed smaller uniforms and extra gear. “We’re proud to have opened another avenue in our town for our girls to play sport.” ANZ branch manager Hiram Taylor says the bank launched the programme in 2012 to help Kiwi netballers achieve their goals. “We’re thrilled to be able to provide a new set of uniforms to the Tokomaru Netball Club. We hope this grant helps the young netballers feel more confident on the court.”
